Who We Are

SafestPokerSites.com was founded in 2012 with the purpose of being an honest resource for poker players. This site is focused on US players since that is where we are from. We found that most ratings and reviews of poker sites are influenced mainly by cash. Most websites will send their visitors to a poker site that pays them the most advertising cash. This doesn’t sit well with us since I would not send any of my friends or family to poker sites that are highly rated on many review sites.

John Mehaffey

Editor-in-chief
@John_Mehaffey

John Mehaffey lives in Las Vegas, NV and has been in the online poker industry since its early days. He has authored thousands of news articles and contributed to hundreds of online poker related websites such as this one. John writes a majority of the articles for Safest Poker Sites.

John has always been an industry watchdog. It all started with contributing at Casinomeister, a popular online casino portal, where he is a member of the Casinomeister Advisory Group. John has also been a moderator at Two Plus Two, which is the most popular online poker forum on the internet.  John has also been published at USPoker.com and Onlinepokerreport.com, among others.

John has never been shy about telling the online poker industry like it is. He has reported on a number of scandals in the industry. He helped expose former Absolute Poker owner Scott Tom’s misbehavior at Two Plus Two where Tom made up countless lies about his poker room. John later helped expose the infamous cheating scandal there.  John also extensively covered the implosions of Lock Poker and Cake Poker/Wincake.

John is the perfect fit for this website. Telling players the upside and downside of every online poker room with his over ten years of knowledge in the industry makes you know that the online poker room choice you are considering has been well researched. He has played on hundreds of online poker rooms on virtually every network that has ever existed.

When John is not writing about poker he is playing it. His favorite game is Seven Card Stud High/Low. In Fact, he cashed in his first World Series of Poker event playing this game. A 14th place cash in 2005 brought home just about five times the buyin as a prize. He also enjoys Omaha High/Low and mixed games. If you play the mixed games in Las Vegas you have probably played with him at your table.  John also frequents poker games in South Dakota, his favorite vacation spot.

If you wish to ask John a question about the poker room that you are considering playing then you can contact us or you may send him a tweet @John_Mehaffey.

Jonathan Stephens

Site Manager
@trikkur

Jonathan Stephens has been playing online poker since 2004, where he started with a $50 deposit at Bodog while he was in high school. After playing and coaching semi-professionally throughout college, Jonathan started the free online poker training site – PokerTrikz.com. In 2008, Jonathan became a full time poker player and poker webmaster.

Jonathan has experience playing at more than 15 different online poker rooms in his career. His most played game was 6-max No Limit Hold’em. He grinded his way from 5NL up to 1000NL in 3 years, but most of his time was spent at the 400NL 6-max tables. He relied on his poker earnings to pay the bills so he knows the importance of choosing a safe poker room that has fast and reliable methods to deposit and withdraw.

Jonathan transitioned entirely over to the webmaster side of things after the events of Black Friday. After being burnt a few times, he wants to share his online poker experiences with others to help find safe poker rooms to play at, while avoiding the bad poker rooms. You can still find Jonathan posting on the twoplustwo poker forums.
