Online Poker Deposit Options

poker deposit methodsThere are two tales when it comes to online poker deposits. It becomes harder and harder for Americans, while at the same time it becomes easier for players in virtually every other country. While it may not be simple, it certainly isn’t impossible to deposit into a U.S. online poker room. We have all of the details below. We compare poker deposits methods with the pros and cons of each option.

U.S Poker Options

International Options

US Deposit Options

American players are down to just a handful of deposit options at offshore sites. Anyone looking to play at one of these online poker rooms should consider learning about Bitcoin. It has become the premier choice for US players due to its convenience and low fees. There are several other options available. It is up to you to decide the one that is right for you using our guide.

Debit Cards at Poker Sites

debit cards
Pros
  • Most players carry a debit card
  • Visa or Mastercard accepted by most poker sites
  • Deposits credited instantly
Cons
  • High decline rate
  • Fees charged by site can be as high as 7%
  • Direct line to bank account

The easiest option, where available. At the same time, there are often fees associated with this method.

Debit cards are issued by banks. The card will have either a Visa or Mastercard logo on it. A debit card works identically to a credit card when making an online poker deposit. The player will be asked to enter the debit card number, security PIN, and expiration date. The site will most likely charge a fee between 4% and 7% if the transaction is initiated by an American player. Those located in other countries may not have a fee charged.

Some U.S. debit cards will get declined. Players should consider using a prepaid international debit card. These may be purchased with cash at grocery and drug stores.

Credit Cards at Poker Sites

credit cards
Pros
  • Instant deposits
  • Convenient for players that carry credit cards
  • Accepted by most poker sites
Cons
  • Bank may charge a cash advance fee
  • Some cards get declined
  • Sites charge fees as high as 7% for deposit

Credit cards are convenient and widely accepted by poker sites.

All poker sites accept credit cards. Some only accept Visa and Mastercard. Others also permit deposits by American Express and Discover. Sites that accept AMEX and Discover tend to have better processing that allows for a higher acceptance rate.

There are three drawbacks to using a credit card for an online poker deposit. One is that there is a fee somewhere in the 4% to 7% range. Another problem is that the issuing bank may treat the deposit as a cash advance. This comes with additional fees that are in addition to the ones charged by the site. Another problem is that banks will often decline these types of transactions. Some U.S. poker sites have better success than others.

Money Transfers

money transfer
Pros
  • Easy deposits by cash or credit card
  • Fees waived on amounts of $250 or higher
  • 100% approval rate
Cons
  • High fees on small deposits
  • Often requires a phone call or trip to check cashing store
  • Banks may charge transactions with cash advance fee

Western Union is a fast way to move cash.

Money transfers are also known as cash transfers. They are processed by Western Union and other such entities. These types of deposits have fallen out of favor with the emergence of Bitcoin. This is due to the high fees involved with cash transfers.

Some sites still accept cash transfers from Western Union and others. These online poker rooms waive the fee on deposits of $250 or more. Deposits may be made by cash at an agent’s office, debit or credit card on the website or phone or using a bank account through the cash transfer’s site. Players must get the receiver’s name and code city before making a deposit. After it is made, contact the site again with the money control number.

Bank Wires

Pros
  • Easy to move large amounts of money
  • Transaction often initiated with a couple of phone calls
  • Sites will often cover all fees
Cons
  • Not feasible for small deposits
  • Fees high if not covered by the site
  • Requires bank account

Bank wires are a great way to move large amounts of money.

Bank wires are offered privately by some U.S. online poker rooms. These are reserved for large transfers by VIP players. This option is not found in the cashier menu. Players must contact support to see if the bank wire option is available.

If the U.S. poker site accepts bank wire, you will need its bank account information. This includes the name on the account. The next step is to contact your bank to initiate the transaction. Note that there are fees on both ends of the transaction. Expect to pay at least $100 for this type of transfer. The poker site may waive it if the deposit is large enough. Always ask if that is the case.

Closed Payment Processors

Some payment processors were unable to stay in business for the long haul. Many were involved in unregulated markets. This left the payment processor vulnerable to fraud or legal action. Some simply found business conditions impossible to operate.

Most U.S. payment processors that closed failed to pay players. This is not the case for most ewallets that serviced players in other parts of the world.

PrepaidATM

Year Closed2006

PrepaidATM was one of the first ewallets to replace Paypal. Players were given a debit card that worked at ATMs and point of sales. It was one of the first of its kind in online gambling. PrepaidATM required merchants to leave a high reserve amount in their accounts and online gambling websites became reluctant to keep such a large amount in their accounts. This caused PrepaidATM to fall out of favor.Cashouts then slowed to players and merchants. The business began to spiral and it quickly lost market share to competitors like Neteller and Firepay. PrepaidATM closed in April 2006. There were reports from players and websites of getting stiffed.

Firepay

Year Closed2007

Firepay was a division of Surefire Commerce. It was a common ewallet and was accepted by most U.S. facing gambling sites before it left the market in October 2006. Firepay had a poor reputation compared to its competitors. There were many complaints by players about having their deposits removed from their bank account multiple times. Firepay support was less than helpful when its customers complained. This caused it to fall out of favor to players. Firepay eventually went completely out of business in December 2007. It gave no notice to players when it closed but did process refunds to players that requested one.

EchecksUS

Year Closed2011

EchecksUS was an electronic check processor used by small and medium sized U.S. facing online poker rooms. The Houston-based company was served by federal authorities in March 2011. The company immediately ceased its operations and all player funds on deposit were lost. Poker rooms also got stiffed.

Epassporte

Year Closed2010

Epassporte specialized in processing affiliate payments for webmasters. It decided to branch out into online poker. Epassporte did not process payments for casinos or sports books and seemed to follow the advice that poker was not gambling. The company received a demand letter from the Department of Justice to cease its online poker processing in April 2008. With no income coming in from online poker, its revenue collapsed. Epassporte went out of business in October 2010.

EwalletXpress

Year Closed2010

EwalletXpress was the ewallet of choice for U.S. players after Neteller left the market. The company was owned by Navaho Networks. Players could connect EwalletXpress to their credit card, debit cards or bank account. Players could also deposit through 900Pay. It was widely accepted at online poker rooms, casinos and sports books. It left the market in November 2010. Players were never paid and the company disappeared with all deposited funds. There was never a known complaint filed by federal authorities.

Pic-Club

Year Closed2013

Pic-Club took a unique approach in their business model. Players made deposits by buying shares in the company. Players could then deposit those shares into an online poker room or casino or withdraw it by check or bank transfer. Payouts slowed to players and poker rooms and it was dropped by most gaming sites. Pic-Club closed in May 2013. Poker Pros Network, a related online poker network, closed at the same time and was about its only customer when it failed. Pic-Club had many players complain about not getting paid.

Quicktender/UseMyWallet

Year Closed2011

Quicktender and UseMyWallet were spin offs of Ecocard, an ewallet that accepts players from most players outside of the United States. Quicktender and UseMyWallet used the Linwood Payment Solutions processor, which was a sting setup by the U.S. Department of Justice in Maryland. The company simply closed its doors and stiffed most of its players. Ecocard still operates though most experienced players will not do business with it after the company stiffed its U.S. players.

Click2Pay

Year Closed2014

Click2Pay was an ewallet that specialized in Canadian players. This was important to players in that country because Neteller and Skrill are not available there. Click2Pay paid all of its players as it was acquired by Wirecard.
