WPT Fallsview Poker Classic Main Event Title Goes to Mike Leah

WPT Fallsview Poker Classic 2018

Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls played host to the World Poker Tour Fallsview Poker Classic over the past few days, with tournaments running from February 5th until the 12th. Four events were on the schedule including the Main Event, featuring a C$5,000 buy-in. The tournament saw a record-setting 517 players competing, with Mike Leah earning the first-place win.

When the final day of gameplay began, Leah would sit 3rd in chips with only 20 players left in the competition. On his way to the final table, Leah would eliminate Igor Tregoubov in 17th place and then double up after a hand with Carlos Chadha to then eliminate two more players and double up again to have a nice chip stack going into the final table, with a total of six competitors remaining.

Even with the eliminations and doubling up, Leah would start the final table second in chips to Chadha. However, it would not be long before Leah would take back the chip lead. Eventually, Chadha would be eliminated in 4th and Tim Rutherford in 3rd, leaving Leah to take on Ryan Yu in heads-up play.

Yu had a nice lead over Leah with 10.8 million to 4.715 million in chips. Leah would eventually overtake his fellow poker pro and on the 8th hand of the matchup, the final hand would take place.

  • Yu held J-8 off-suit against Leah’s 9-5 off-suit.
  • A five on the river gave Leah the hand and Yu the boot as he was eliminated in 2nd place.

The win marked the first time that Leah earned a World Poker Tour title. Leah earned the title win and prize money plus a seat to the WPT Tournament of Champions, a $15,000 value.
